So I spent all day yesterday out in the Coconino National Forest (in northern Arizona) doing my best to be an ATV guide and coach for a group involved with the AMA and L&M Video Productions. While I'm almost exclusively a closed-course, motocross kind of guy, I couldn't pass up this opportunity for fun and a chance to meet new folks.
Backing up a bit, I received a call out of the blue last week from a guy named Mark, who I had only recently met. He is very involved on the two-wheel side here in Arizona and was helping arrange a "Ride Guide" week for the AMA and others.
Wanted to know if I could help out and be the guide for the "quad day" on Tuesday. "Sure thing!" I said without really knowing anything about what I would be doing.
Despite a little rain, the day turned out perfect as I had the opportunity to spend time on the trails around the Munds Park area with Bill Wood and James Holter of the American Motorcyclist (AMA) as well as Lonnie, Richard, Lloyd and Marilyn Liebetrau with L&M, and Dave "Pickleman" Vlasicak (Rev-Loc).
In the end, I was able to lend value to the trip despite my lack of trail acumen. But perhaps more importantly, came away energized to move forward with my plans for Tetracurve. After all, these folks were "working" yesterday!
